It was a new mix of athletes, there were runners, paddleboarders, mountain bikers, kayakers and adventure racers all going solo head-to-head to be the fastest to the finish line. The race started with a 6 mile run which Eric Sullivan from Crested Butte, Colorado killed in just under 38 minutes. But his lead was not secure because next he had a 5.5 mile paddle around the shoreline of beautiful Vail Lake. Sully lost a little of his lead to Darren Clarke (who also had the fastest paddle of the day) and they left on the final bike leg just minutes apart. Sully, though, has some biking legs and he put the hammer down to finish with the fastest bike leg of the day. Meanwhile in the women's category, Tessa Roorda from Sao Paulo Brazil was battling at the front with the boys. She was 6th overall in the run and maintained her lead over fellow adventure racers Melissa Coombes of Pensalcola, FL and Windy Marks of Phoenix, AZ. Melissa gave it her all and came back with the fastest women's bike leg of the day, but it wasn't enough to overcome the consistent power of Tessa as she pedaled to the finish capturing the women's category. The winners of the men's and women's category each received $300 in cash and future race entries. The fastest man and women for each leg (bike, paddle and run) each received $50 cash for their outstanding efforts. So the competition is on. Join the latest rage and join us in Big Bear Lake for stop #2 in the California Multisport Series. Sully and Tessa will both be back to defend their newly crowned titles. Windy Marks also says she be back to challenge Tessa at stop #2. And look for Windy's husband Dave who suffered a broken kayak rudder this time, but says he'll be back to challenge Sully at Big Bear. And all eyes will be on Aussie Adventure Racer, Darren Clarke, who is living and training in the mountains of Big Bear and who was surely in the running before a little bad luck on the bike. He will certainly be ready to challenge Sullivan for the series points. See you in Big Bear, July 27. Watch for details.
