California Multisport - Big Bear Lake A beautiful mountain day greeted the athletes to Big Bear's Multisport Event. Athletes gathered at the Big Bear Discovery Center to challenge the Run, Bike, Run Mulitsport course. The clouds seemingly gathered to watch and provided some cooler temps as the runners took off for a big hill climb leading to the famous Pacific Crest Trail and finishing with a technical, rocky run down Big Bear's Cougar Crest trail. Phillip Tinstman took the early lead in the Men's category and never looked back. Jessi Stensland took the lead in the Women's and battled for the front of the Men's field as well. Following the run, the competitors took their bikes up the same steep climb but continued climbing around Delamar Mountain. Though some bikers were definitely working too hard to take in the view, the course passed some of the best lookouts in the valley providing a fantastic view of the entire lake and San Gorgonio in the background. After nearly 20km on the bikes, Tinstman and Stensland were still in the lead. Daniel Dolezal followed in 2nd place for the Men and Amber Naughton picked up several places with a fast bike time, but not enough to catch Stensland. Theresa Uhrig and Heather DeVito were neck and neck, battling for the 3rd podium spot. The final run was a 4km that everyone agreed felt much longer and harder that it looked. Tinstman and Stensland held their leads and won the Men and Women's categories. Tinstman won by 14 minutes over 2nd place and Stensland won by a whoping 19 minutes over the 2nd place female and placed 4th in the overall. Big Bear local Heather DeVito made a big push on the final run to move into 3rd place over Theresa Uhrig, but the surprise finish made it a race to the final second. Race organizers surprised the racers with a rope climb that took racers OVER the finish line instead of just running through. It was a tough climb up the hanging, knotted ropes and down the cargo net to reach the real finish of the race. Heather was completely spent as she approached the line and though (or maybe hoped) it was a joke. Theresa Uhrig, just passed by Heather, also saw the climb and didn't think she had enough energy to get over the top. The two girls gave it their all to get up and over, Theresa edging out Heather by seconds. In the Junior category, 17 year old Ramon Escobar finished on top of the podium even after a nasty crash on his bike. Local mountaineering hero, 13 year old Jordan Romero finished 2nd. Complete results are posted under the results link. BIG THANKS to all the volunteers who helped make it all happen. See you in October. |

|
Wednesday, 17 June 2009 |
Stop #2 of the California Multisport- Big Bear Lake, CA- 7000'July 18, 2009 Trail Run- Mountain Bike- Run New top dog Slater Fletcher will have a target on his back, with the likes of Big Bear's own Teddy Devito looking to bring the title to Big Bear. Watch for Mexico's new up and comer Ramon Escobar to fight for the podium. He comes from Tecate, he's 17, and he's fast..real fast. The other Devito, local multisport specialist Heather will certainly give Redondo Beach's, Tiffany Myers, some heat. The two slugged it out in February at the Snow Shoe the Bear 10k in a foot of fresh snow. Tiffany edging out the expedition racing veteran Heather back then. The one that could shock the field is Theresa Uhrig. In Vail Lake she proved she fast on foot, running just minutes behind the men. The duathlon format will certainly lean to her strengths. And you can never count out local multisport athlete Kim Williams who lead the field until the final run at Vail Lake. All levels of athletes welcome. A perfect course for newbies. If you are waiting till your ready, this is it! Multisport offers a marked course with a trail run and mountain bike followed by a short trail run to finish. 9km Trail Run- 20km MTB- 4km Run Top finishers 2.5 hours
Race categories include male solo, female solo and 2 person relay and junior (17 and under).
A great training event and the opportunity to improve your run, bike and paddle skills with no time wasted on navigation, no stopping to find the way. Measure your fastest time against the other competitors' fastest times, no excuses for missed routes, bad choices, or misplaced checkpoints.
Go hard, do your best on a course that is well marked and easy to follow. Our exciting venues offer a great place to hang out and watch the action. See who's fast and find potential teammates. We guarantee you'll love our finish line. No lonely, dark and deserted finish lines with a handful of drowsy volunteers scrambling out of their cars to welcome you. Instead be welcomed by fans, pumping music, raffles, and a live announcer that welcomes and congratulates you at the finish - It's a great feeling, you'll come to enjoy and expect. Cal Multisport Big Bear is event #3 in the hotly contested Conquer the Bear Challenge. 20+ athletes have started a 6 month challenge that began with the Snow Shoe the Bear 10k event in February, the Big Bear XC MTB Race, the July 12 Paddlefest and then the Big Bear Multisport. Conquer the Bear finishes with the Run the Bear Marathon September 12. www.openairbigbear.com for more info.
On-line registration is now open. Avoid the late fee, register by 7/11. |

Adventurer and Triathlete, Slater Fletcher, made it all seem easy as he paddled, biked and ran to complete the Vail Lake Multisport Course. It certainly looked easy from the view of the spectators, but Slater said he was pushing hard. Slater's admitted weakest event, the run, was the last event of the day. Slater said it was a hard run and although he had a 10 minute lead at the start of the run, he couldn't help but look over his shoulder to see if runner-up, Josh Williams was making up time. In the end, Slater finished 13 minutes ahead of 2nd place to capture the top podium spot of the first 2009 California Multisport event. Philip Tinstman had an amazing bike seciton that put him on top the blue box, 3rd place. On the women's side, this was the race to watch. Early leader Kim Williams, ultra runner and adventurer of Big Bear was first off the paddle and held a good lead as the women headed out on the mountain bike loop. Snowshoe Champion Tiffany Meyers made up time on the bike and was on Kim's wheel as the two descended the final technical single-track. Kim managed to pull a small lead as Tiffany bobbled on the steep rutty course. But it just wasn't enough to hold off Tiffany on the run loop. Tiffany handled the run loop barely breaking a sweat and led the women's field at the top of the podium. Los Angeles runner/triathlete Theresa Uhrig made a roaring comeback to land a second, with expert mountain biker Amber Naughton of Flagstaff rounding out the podium. Junior standout, 17 year old Mexican national Ramon Escobar of Tecate, Baja landed 5th place over all, winning the Junior division. Tyler Perry was rock solid in second and mountaineer star Jordan Romero of Big Bear Lake, age 12, rounded out the podium of juniors slowed by the only puncture of the race. Complete results and more stories posted here tomorrow. Thanks again to all of the volunteers who worked from sun up to sun down to really made this event happen. The Podiums Women 1. Tiffany Meyers 2. Teresa Uhrig 3. Amber Naughton Men 1. Slater Fletcher 2. Josh Williams
3. Philip Tinstman Junior 1. Ramon 2. Tyler Peery 3. Jordan Romero Relay 1. Monique Fletcher, Luke Weins, Nick
Congratulations to all the competitors.

Get READY for Vail Lake! Great News! Temps are predicted in the high 70's! It's going to be a beautiful weekend! 2008 Champions Sully and Tiffany are registered and tell us they are strong and ready to defend their titles in 2009. Tiffany was in bike racing this weekend tuning up her mountain biking skills on the challenging trails high altitude trails of Big Bear. But, she won't be without challengers. Orange County racer, Monique Fletcher, has been training full time running and biking. We'll see if she can pick up her paddling game to challenge Tiffany on the waters of Vail Lake. The girls race is going to be fun to watch. Monique's husband Slater is fitter and stronger than we've ever seen him. In 2008 he couldn't quite catch Sully, but pretty sure that Sully's going to have to bring his "A" game to keep ahead of Slater. Sully's been training in the high altitude of Colorado and working on speed so we'll see if Slater can hang. Course details.... The course will start on the kayak, transition to run and finish on the bike. The kayak course will include a single loop of beautiful Vail Lake. The run will include some technical trails, hills and fun singletrack. We'll expect the first finishers in just around 3 hours...about 1 hour for each discipline. Share the fun, bring a friend. Registration is still open and volunteers are also needed. Directions to Vail Lake - From Interstate 15 in Temecula, head East on Highway 79. Travel approximately 9 miles. Go PAST the main Vail Lake entrance and watch for California Multisport signs. |

A challenge to all California's that call yourself a competitive multisport athlete. It's just been confirmed Eric 'Sully' Sullivan has secured his commitment to the California Multisport Series of 2009. He has put hold his world tour of international expeditions, meetings with world leaders, exclusive club hopping and important political commitments to return to southern California and compete in the exciting 2009 3 race series. Will Huntington Beach's Slater Fletcher and his new winter training program have the edge he needs? Is there anybody from northern California ever brave enough for the challenge? Can southern California, the mecca of all multisporters and triathletes produce any new faces to this tough format? Could even a relay team be formed to beat the reigning champion? Fresh off a pre-breakfast 25km trail run at his 10,000' base camp in Crested Butte, the Team Salomon Crested Butte workhorse 'Sully' tells us through his agent (it took us 10 days just to get an appointment with his agent) "I'm very glad to putting California Multisport back on my calendar. The events are fun, fast and a great compliment to the array of 1/2's, full Ironman's and expeditions I have going on this year." Later in the day, between massages, Sully comments about handedly winning all 3 California Multisport events of 2008 "The courses are diverse and keep you on your toes. I almost took it out of the big ring last year, but luckily averted such an embarrassment". When asked about the competition level of Californians, his agent replied with one of those emoticons of that little yellow guy on the floor, pounding his fist in amusement. We're not sure what to make of this. California Multisport - A new alternative to triathlons and adventure racing. 3 So Cal races in 2009: 3-5 hours, team or solo, mountain bike/ paddle/trek, no navigation, no support crew from Karen and Paul of Team SOLE. Novice, intermediate and experts and pros all line up together, the way it should be done. www.californiamultisport.com
